Quest Toad for Oracle and VirtualBox 4.0.4 => Fixed in 4.0.6

Reported by: Vlad Valeyev Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 4.0.4
Keywords: Toad for Oracle Quest Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description

I have used Toad for Oracle from Quest under VirtualBox 3.2.12 for the last 2 months quite intensively. It worked flawlessly with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit as a host and Windows XP Pro 32-bit as guest OS containing Toad.

Once I have upgraded to VirtualBox 4.0.4 certain interface in Toad causes VirtualBox to reset the session (with no additional notification I get an initial screen of VirtualBox initializing the VM). The function in question is schema browser window in Toad. Invoking it does not cause the crash immediately but quite reliably crashing VirtualBox in several seconds. I have used this functionality of Toad under VirtualBox 3.2.12 multiple times and for a long duration without any issues. I had these crashes after the upgrade in 100% of times when I tried doing it.

I'm attaching VirtualBox log file. However, reviewing it I could not find an exact pattern explaining what causing the crash and re-boot.

I narrowed down the issue a little:

Un-installed VirtualBox 4.0.4 and re-installed 3.2.12. Brought up the existing VM and started Toad. Opened schema browser window and in few seconds the issue has re-appeared - VM disappeared and then automatically restarted.

Re-installed Guest Additions 3.2.12 over previously installed Guest Additions 4.0.4 overwriting newer files (essentially forcing the downgrade of guest additions).

Started Toad and it works fine as it worked before.

My guess is some change in guest additions is causing the issue.

Also, after automatic reboot of VM Windows has reported an error that MS knowledge base is recognizing as a need to upgrade BIOS...

Thanks for these findings. Does it also work with VirtualBox 4.0.4 when the guest uses 3.2.12 Guest Additions?

I didn't have a chance to check it.

Is it a valid configuration to have Guest Additions 3.1.12 under Virtual Box 4.0.4?

I'd upgrade VB to 4.0.4 again without upgrading GA then.

Yes, it is possible to use 3.2.12 guest additions and run the VM under VirtualBox 4.0.4. VBox maintains backward compatibility with old additions.

I have the same problems with "Toad for Oracle from Quest". After upgrading to VB 4.0.4 Toad causes VB to restart. Downgrading the Guest Additions to 3.1.12 seems to fix the problem.

Having the same problem on Server Ubuntu with XP 32-bit and Win7 64-bit hosts. The crash pattern is somewhat different, where XP automatically restarts. The Win7 host only freezes, forcing a poweroff to continue.

I have the same issue. Where can I get an updated VBoxGuestAdditions.iso? The above link does not work and I can't find 4.0.6 yet. Or how can I download the old version of the guest additions without having to install VirtualBox 3 again?

Thank you for the new like. This version of VBoxGuestAdditions-r70636.iso is working good for TOAD 10.6.1.3. Thanks!
