Samba: Guest to Host: Delayed Write Failure

Reported by: ToddAndMargo Owned by:
Component: network/hostif Version: VirtualBox 3.2.10
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Linux

Description (last modified by Frank Mehnert)

Hi All, Host: Motherboard: Supermicro X8SAX Processor: x5650 Memory: 24 GB OS: CentOS 5.5 x64 Samba: samba-3.0.33-3.29.el5_5.1

Guest: Windows Terminal Server 2003 x32, Service Pack 2 Backup software: Cobain Backup 10.1.1.816 http://www.cobian.se/cobianbackup.htm

VM: VBox 3.2.10 (VirtualBox-3.2-3.2.10_66523_rhel5-1.x86_64.rpm) Bridged Networking

I am not able to backup files from my Windows 2003 server, x32,SP2 guest to my Samba server on my host with Cobian Backup do to a “Delayed Write Failure” error. Cobian erroneously reports this error as “Disk is full. There is not enough free space on disk. - Native error: 00065”. But Windows clearly reports this error as a Delayed Write Failure.

I also have trouble dragging and dropping large files to my Samba shares from my guest (slow).

Please note that I am able to backup successful to another similarly configured Samba server that is on another computer (not this guest's host). It is only Guest to Host where this issue appears.

I have included my Samba smb.conf, my Virtual Box logs, and my Samba logs. I was working on this problem on October 20, 2010 (10/20/2010) between 15:00 and 17:00.

Also, on my own office mock up, I have no problems with Samba and my XP guest, but have extreme problems (very, very slow) with both my Vista and my W7 guests. So, don't try to troubleshooting this with an XP guest.

If anyone is researching on this, the workaround is to use Virtual Box's “Shared Folders”, which now works well.

Please let me know if I can assist you with the resolution of this bug.

Many thanks, -T

Replying to ToddAndMargo:

I take that back. “Shared Folders” are erratic. One boot it works; the next book it does not. See bug #7642.

Please also change the "priority" to "major", as this is a production level server and I can not get a reliable backup. This could really, really hurt my customer to the tune of several hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages.

Many thanks, -T
