I would love to say that's the case, however, the problem started as I was installing VirtualBox 3.2.2. The network install portion of the program disabled the connection (as it always does) but when VirtualBox reconnected to the network I am now only able to connect at 100Mbps.
I have disabled/renabled, repaired the connection, deleted the driver in device manager, and downloaded the "correct" drivers from the manufacturer, but these steps have not fixed the problem.
Other Ideas: One other option I thought of was to uninstall VirtualBox 3.2.2|4 and install a previous version. However, since I am currently in need of the guest OS for a project I can't do that just yet.

I'm also using a gigabit LAN connection and I've never encountered such a problem
maybe you should check your NIC's drivers, your network cables and your local switch
