None of my virtial machines will run since upgrading to VBox3

Description
I am running Ubuntu 8.04 and have been using VBox successfully for the past couple of years. I recently upgraded to VBox v.3 and all was well for a day or two but then my Windows machine wouldn't open unless every time I opened in Safe Mode and then selected a restore point. Then it wouldn't run at all - it gets as far as the splash screen for Windows and then I get a blue screen.
After this I uninstalled 3 and re-installed 2.2 but the same thing happened, plus my Ubuntu 9.10 machine does almost exactly the same thing.

Did I understand you correctly that you have an Ubuntu 9.10 VM and this doesn't start neither? What are the symptoms of the Ubuntu VM?
Regarding the Windows VM: Does changing the PIIX controller from PIIX4 to PIIX3 help?

Can you try different guest OSes ? (Ubuntu 8.04 Live CD and Windows XP) What happens?
