Full screen mode broken on MacOS hosts with Guest additions 5.1.4 and later

Description
I am running VBOX on MacOS. I am tracking both MacOS versions (currently on macOS Sierra (10.12.2), and VirtualBox versions (currently on 5.1.12). I use all my VMs (Linux) in full screen mode
Last september I had upgraded VBOX to 5.1.4. I then upgraded the guest editions to 5.1.4 as well As a result, full screen mode stopped working: the VMs no longer occupied the whole screen, but only part of it. Luckily I was able to go back to the previous guest additions (5.0.20) and got full screen back to working as usual.
Today I upgraded VBOX to 5.1.12 and tried again upgrading the guest additions to 5.1.12. Same effect: full screen broken the same way (full screen no longer occupies the entire screen). Again, downgraded guest additions to 5.0.20.
What seems to happen is that the guest additions somehow no longer automatically match the resolution of the VM screen to the resolution of the host display (1280x800).
I also see differences in the View menu. With guest additions 5.0.20, the View menu is like this:
- Full Screen Mode (Host+F) is checked
- Auto Resize Guest Display is checked.
- Scaled Mode (Host+L) is unchecked
With guest additions 5.1.4 and later:
- Full Screen Mode (Host+F) is checked
- Auto Resize Guest Display is checked but greyed out
- Scaled Mode (Host+L) is unchecked but greyed out

Log from GOOD vm (full screen works fine)
I attached a log from the VM where full screen does not work, and also one from a VM where full screen works. The difference between the two is that the failing one runs guest additions 5.1.12, when the one that works runs additions 5.0.20. Other than that, the two VMS are identical (one is a clone of the other).
Both logs confirm that the host screen is at resolution 1280x800.
The "good" VM sizes the guest display to 1280x734 The "bad" VM sizes the guest display to 800x600.

Just upgraded to VirtualBox 5.1.16 r113841 (Qt5.6.2) with extensions and guest additions. Still get the issue: still not using full screen.
I reverted back to the 5.0.20 guest additions.

I have gone through each and every version as it comes out - currently 5.2.26. I have upgraded the guest additions each time.
Each time, the full screen support is broken as I describe above. Each time I revert back to guest additions 5.0.20 and full screen support works fine again.
Could someone please at least take a look at this problem ? Thanks.

I am now at VBOX 5.2.12 r122591 (Qt5.6.3) and the problem still exists. Could someone please take a look at the problem ?

The logs that you've posted are about 1 1/2 year old. Can you post an updated failed-attempt log? And please state clearly your guest, I couldn't make it from the log. I'd like to be able to replicate your issue, if possible.
