Linux hosts OSS audio driver support broken in VirtualBox v5.1

Reported by: dinosaur0 Owned by:
Component: audio Version: VirtualBox 5.1.6
Keywords: sound, audio, OSS, Linux host Cc:
Guest type: all Host type: Linux

Description

While the host OSS v4 sound driver used to work just fine with VirtualBox till and including v5.0, v5.1 cannot work with it any more; only ALSA and Pulseaudio still work.

When starting a VM with OSS as the host-side sound driver configured, I get the following message: "Some HDA audio streams (PCM Input) could not be opened. Guest applications generating audio output or depending on audio input may hang. Make sure your host audio device is working properly. Check the logfile for error messages of the audio subsystem."

I'm also attaching the VBox.log file for the corresponding VM (note that it doesn't matter which VM I start, be it a Windows or Linux guest, with either HD Audio or AC97 guest-side audio driver).

You tested 5.1.4 (according to the log file), please you also test 5.1.6?

Oh you sneaky guy you ! :-D

I checked the version yesterday: I guess it was just before you published 5.1.6.

Indeed, v5.1.6 solves the host-side OSS incompatibility issue.

However, there is still the guest-side audio delay issue with 5.1.6, like I described in: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/15924
