VBoxManage setproperty defaultfrontend separate fails

Hi,
setting global property defaultfrontend to "separate" fails.
% VBoxManage setproperty defaultfrontend separate VBoxManage: error: Code NS_ERROR_ABORT (0x80004004) - Operation aborted (extended info not available) VBoxManage: error: Context: "COMSETTER(DefaultFrontend)(bstrDefaultFrontend.raw())" at line 900 of file VBoxManageMisc.cpp %
Same failure with gui or headless, whereas VBoxManage modifyvm "guest" --defaultfrontend separate succeeds.
Host is running Ubuntu 14, 3.13.0-65-generic on i5-4250U. VirtualBox 5.0.6r103037 with Extension Pack 5.0.6 103037.
