#10898 closed defect (fixed)

VBoxHeadless stops respond during "Changing the VM state from 'RUNNING' to 'RESETTING'." => Fixed in SVN

Reported by: NicklasE Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 4.1.16
Keywords: reboot freeze RESETTING Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Linux

Description

  • Host: Ubuntu 11.04 64Bit, HP ProLiant DL360 G5
  • Guest: Windows 7 64bit, VirtualBox 4.1.16

Sometimes during reboot of the guest OS, VirtualBox does not complete the 'RESETTING' state, it just freeze. This problem accrues more often on the more faster HP ProLiant DL360 G7 that uses VirtualBox 4.1.18. The Vbox.log has not been modified.

I can't shut down the guest with "VBoxManage controlvm [name] poweroff". I have to kill the VBoxHeadless process and start guest again to make it boot.

A core dump should help debugging this problem. When your VM is at the state where you can't shut it down or reset then do 'kill -4' to the VBoxHeadless PID (make sure to have the core dump capability before). The kill command will force the VM process to terminate. If you have a core dump, please contact me via email at frank _dot_ mehnert _at_ oracle _dot_ com. Please also provide the corresponding VBox.log file in that case.

Is it possible to get a status update on this ticket? I sent an e-mail to Frank on Friday 14/9 with the core dump and log.

Thanks for the core dump. For some reason it is hard to get sensible information out of the dump despite the fact that I have debug information available for the VBox package. Is your Ubuntu 11.04 distribution up-to-date?

comment:5 by NicklasE, 12 years ago

The system is now up-to-date but I still get same problem. Do you want another core dump now when the system is up to date?

We think we fixed your problem. Could you check if this test build fixes your problem? Thanks!

Its hard to test a bug that appears sometimes but the testing I have done so far shows that the bug is solved. The VMMs does not freeze anymore during reboot. Thanks a lot for the support and the quick fix.
