Description
I'm suddenly getting the following error message while booting every VM. Existing, or new VMs for the first time. (more following error message).
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine testws.
Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT).
Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb}
I found the VMMR0.r0 file in /usr/lib/virtualbox. It is owned by root, along with every file in this and lower directories:
/usr/lib/virtualbox$ ls -l VMMR0.r0 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 725256 2011-11-04 08:17 VMMR0.r0
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling virtualbox, same condition.

Have a look at the VBox.log file. Actually it is the path component /usr which is not owned by root. All components of the path must be owned by root for security reasons. Otherwise the user which owns the directory would be able to replace one of the libraries of VirtualBox.
