Seamless mode aritifact-ing

Reported by: Kyle Owned by:
Component: guest additions Version: VirtualBox 4.1.6
Keywords: seamless, artifacts Cc:
Guest type: X11 Host type: Windows

Description (last modified by aeichner)

I have a win 7 64 bit host with a ubuntu 11.10 32 bit guest that I have installed the guest additions for using the mount and install method documented on the vbox site. When initiated into seamless (using host + L or menu) there is extreme artifact-ing that results in an image being left in very quick intervals on the host screen. This does not occur in full screen or scale mode.

I uploaded a screen shot as well as the VBox.log here: http://assets.slajax.com/filestore/bugs/vbox-seamless-artifacts.jpg http://assets.slajax.com/filestore/bugs/vbox-seamless-artifacts.txt

Please let me know if there are more tests or information I can provide.

Yes this is with Unity. I've also tried it with Mint Linux to try to rule out unity. Same issue. I had some luck for a bit with unity-2d (or so it seamed) but it didn't really last long.

VBox.log is here: http://assets.slajax.com/filestore/bugs/vbox-seamless-artifacts.txt

Sorry, I couldn't find a file upload button here to attach it.

My bad, attached the log.

Being related to #9934 might make sense.

One of the things I did try previously that seemed to work was completely strip all of the 3d / compiz related stuff out of ubuntu.

My test case was not concrete, but I'll try that again and report if I have any luck in eliminating compiz like features.

What do you do to trigger this? Just switch into seamless and move your window(s) in any way? If you want to test whether it is related to the guest's use of 3D, just disable 3D passthrough before starting the machine.

@michael - This is triggered anytime I enter seamless mode. I've disabled and enabled 3D on both distros. No difference.

Can you suggest any test cases that I can go over to help?

If you raise and then lower a host window over them, what happens to the artifacts? And do they generally stay around until you exit seamless mode again, or do they disappear after a while?

comment:9 by Kyle, 12 years ago

If I maximize or drop a host window over them they are cleared from the screen.

Also, They disappear when I exit seamless mode.

Is there anything else I can do to help debug this issue? I am dying to be able to use this feature.
