Guest OS Hangs after Startup — at Version 6

Reported by: Brian Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 4.1.6
Keywords: ubuntu windows itunes sync freeze Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Linux

Description (last modified by vasily Levchenko)

VirtualBox 4.1.6 (Latest Update) Host OS: Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) Guest OS: Windows 7 (64-bit) Guest Memory: 3074MB Guest Video Memory: 256MB Processor(s): 4 CPUs

I startup the virtual machine, it boots and automatically logs into windows 7. I start iTunes, and it begins syncing with my iPod. After 10-XX seconds, the guest os has a complete freeze, and gives absolutely no response. The only way to close is to force quit; and then force kill the process to allow it to re-run. This only occurs whenever I try to sync to my iPod, if I don't run iTunes, then there is no problem. Also, I have already fixed the mount error on my host so the iPod is properly mounted before passing-through to the guest os.

iTunes Version: 10.5 iPod iOS Version: 5.0.1

I experience the same problem on similar setup:

Host: Ubuntu 11.10 Linux 3.0.0-13-generic unity 4.24.0

Guest: Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

But in my case Windows always freezes about 30 seconds after I log into it, even if I do nothing in it.

I seem to have fixed the problem (it no longer occurs).

  • I re-installed the latest extension pack.
  • I lowered video memory from maximum allowed to 50% (256 to 128 MB).
  • I disabled 2D Video Acceleration.

After performing the 3 steps above, the problem no longer persists. I am unsure if any one, or all three will solve the problem for other users, so please leave the bug report open.

Perhaps the problem has to do something with enabling experimental Direct3D support in Virtualbox Extensions when installing in guest.

In any case VB v4.1.8 works fine under Ubuntu 11.10 x64 host with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 guest (experimental Direct3D support is disabled)

The problem was miraculously fixed in VB 4.1.10 but is back in 4.1.12. Is anyone having the same issue?

Could you please attach the log file?
