VirtualBox refuses to start up — at Version 4

Reported by: leo1123581321 Owned by:
Component: VM control Version: VirtualBox 4.1.6
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Mac OS X

Description (last modified by Frank Mehnert)

Everytime I try to start up VirtualBox, whether the machine or the program itself, I receive a weird error message:

Start Tag: invalid element name

Location: 'Users/(user name)/Library/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml', line 13 (0), column 2.

/Users/vbox/tinderbox/4.1-mac-rel/src/VBox/Main/src-server/VirtualBoxlmpl.cpp[485] (nsresult VirtualBox::init())

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: VirtualBox Interface: IVirtualBox {c28be65f-1a8f-43b4-81f1-eb60cb516e66}

Does anyone know what this error code means and how I can resolve it? I tried the basic steps, reinstalling the software, restarting the computer, and resetting the Mac's smc. None of these steps resolved the issue.

Please attach the file which is specified in the error message. There is some error in it. Did you edit it manually?

Possible File referenced in error?

Replying to frank: I attached the file like you asked. If you meant the other file: VitualBoxlmpl.cpp; I found no directory to this file and an extensive search of my hard drive was fruitless. My best guess is that this is a ghost directory.

Yes. Have a look at line 13 of VirtualBox.xml. That line should also start with "<ExtraDataItem", not <3d688}. You could fix that manually but there is still the question how this can happen. Again, did you manually edit this file? Did your host crash at some time?
