VirtualBox Manager settings display corruption — at Initial Version

Description
I start VirtualBox and see a listing of my VMs - about 17 of them. I select any which is powered off, then select Settings. If it loads without error, I press cancel and press Settings again. Usually, within 1 to 3 iterations, the displayed settings indicate "Invalid settings detected", sometimes with a more specific error message. Pressing Cancel, and trying again after a few seconds, results in the correct display of the settings.
It seems that the more quickly I press Settings after Cancel, the more likely the next load will be corrupted. Sometimes the first query fails, sometimes it fails for several times before loading correctly, sometimes VirtualBox Manager hangs or crashes.
The host is a quad core windows 7 64bit professional, guest can be anything.
I tried uninstalling VirtualBox, rebooting and then reinstalling, but that made no difference.
