Description

Thanks for providing this great virtualization solution - i really like it.

Installation of extension packs should be performed by operating system utilities (rpm, dpkg) because of the following reasons

  • it creates extra work for system administrators to do a full virtualbox installation in an automated way
  • automatic upgrading of extension packs is not so nice if you are using virtualbox in behind of a corporate firewall
  • checksumming of all installed files based on RPM/DPKG checksums (like rpm -V) is not possible
  • license questions should be asked on download, not on installation
  • extension packs should also be maintainable by apt/yum/... repositories
  • ...

Resolution: wontfix

We will not do that for two reasons:

  1. The intention of the extension pack is to have one package for all supported hosts. Creating packages which can be installed by dpkg/rpm/yum/apt-get would require to create a set of packages.
  2. There are licensing-issues.
