The same problem exists on a Solaris Express Community Edition (SX:CE build 104) host, and VirtualBox 2.1.2, when the "Enable Passthrough" option is checked for the host CD/DVD Drive:

Cannot open host device '/devices/pci@0,0/pci-ide@4/ide@0/sd@1,0:c,raw' for read/write access. Check the permissions of that device (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED).
Unknown error creating VM (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED).

For a windows xp host, a workaround could be to run vbox 2.1.2 from a user with administrator privileges.

But for vbox 2.1.2 on a Solaris host, running vbox as user "root" doesn't work around the problem.

I am having the same issue with 2.2.4 with OpenSolaris 2009.06 (Amd 64) host and Windows XP guest. Are there any pointers how to solve? Any suggestions I can try? Thanks.
