Description
The display panel in Ubuntu only shows the current resolution and 800x600, 640-480, there is no way to set a specific resolution other than that. Maybe adding a dialog to set a specific resolution using the resizing ability of the guest additions will offer a simple solution for this. (there needs to be a GUI for this not only VBOXManage display hints)

The request is for having a dialog that allows you to select a specific resolution rather than just resizing the window to an arbitary resolution and getting the guest additions to resize the guest. If I want lets say 1028x768 there is no way to set that specific resolution.
This is needed due to some Linux guests not showing resolutions properly in their display settings like Ubuntu.
I think there is a way to do this with VBoxManage setvideomodehint but maybe it's feasible to also have a dialog for this to make it more convenient due to guests that don't show resolutions in their display settings properly.
I don't understand your problem. After you installed the Guest Additions and you rebooted your guest you will be able to resize the guest window using the mouse to set a resolution which fits your needs.
