#9586 new defect
Seamless Mode cuts out Drop-Down boxes where options are not inside Window/Dialog
Reported by: | stewaj03 | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | GUI/seamless | Version: | VirtualBox 4.1.2 |
Keywords: | drop-down combo boxes | Cc: | |
Guest type: | Windows | Host type: | Windows |
Description
If you drop-down a combo boc and the list of options full-out of the active window in Seamless Mode, you cannot see them. I have upgraded from 3.1.8 to 4.1.2 and never saw this issue in 3.1.8. The guest PC is a clean build of Windows XP with 4.1.2 tools installed.
See picture which shows the issue.

Confirming this bug, using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS as host and Windows 7 as guest. But this does NOT occur on another machine with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS as host and Windows XP as guest!
I will change the machines/hosts and tell you what the result is.

Example from 2015 in VBox 4.3.18 hosting WinXP
comment:2 by , 9 years ago
Not sure why this hasn't gotten any attention, but I can still easily reproduce this bug on my Debian Linux testing host, running VirtualBox 4.3.18_Debianr96516 with both a Windows XP SP3 and a Windows 7 guests, both with up to date guest additions. Fresh example:
The fact that some people have it consistently, while others never do, hints to me that this may be an incompatibility with a window manager or video driver, perhaps? Possibly relevant, on my system:
- OpenBox 3.5.2
- I am not running xcompmgr (seamless wreaked havoc with its shadowing)
- Xorg driver: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.21.15
- CPU: Intel Haswell Core i7-4790S CPU @ 3.20GHz (HD 4600 graphics)
- Chipset: Intel Z97
PS: Could someone please add me as CC so I get updates about this ticket? Thanks!

This also happens in windows hosts (VBox 4.3.26). I have this constantly happening in a Win7 host with WinXP guest.
Check this link: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=67491
To me it doesn't seem to be a bug. It seems as something not taken into account when designing some VBox aspect (internal VBOX routine? / video driver?).

The reason I think this is a bug is that, per my screenshot, Guest Additions' video driver manages to capture menu panels, but not drop-down widgets. So it seems to me that whatever methods are employed to capture areas to preserve in seamless mode needs a new condition to add this missing type.
