#9525 closed defect (obsolete)

VM Inaccessible: A differencing image of snapshot {XXX} could not be found. Could not find an open hard disk with UUID {XXX}.

Reported by: Julien V. Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 4.1.2
Keywords: snapshot, E_FAIL, SnapshotMachine Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description (last modified by aeichner)

I've created a new snapshot, then deleted previous snapshot, so VirtualBox merged the snapshots during a while. When I came back some time after and tried to run my virtual machine, it was set as Inaccessible, following message was displayed:

A differencing image of snapshot {acd6ad3e-6a80-4d5a-9ae1-bb535c0eca31} could not be found. Could not find an open hard disk with UUID {e3615b79-4c5a-4621-bd61-b2fe9424520f}. Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005) Component: SnapshotMachine Interface: IMachine {5eaa9319-62fc-4b0a-843c-0cb1940f8a91}

So I cannot use my virtual machine anymore. Do you know how to fix this problem?

I have the same problem it happen sometimes, but cannot find the pattern of action that create the problem :(. It seems related to create /meging / delete snapshot and, last time, saving a machine (this time i lost the data, unable to reconstruct the right *.vbox file :( ) It seems that the reference to harddisk are missing in the *.vbox file i.e. i found this value:

.... <MediaRegistry>

<HardDisks/> <DVDImages/> <FloppyImages/>

</MediaRegistry> ...

But the snapshot section of the file is OK, so reconstructing the reference i.e. : <HardDisks>

<HardDisk uuid="{03d17f18-2335-4470-9cf1-fc75740d5fcd}" location="Ubuntu-Workdisk1.vdi" format="VDI" type="Normal"/>

..... make the VM working again.

I have the same problem, and I resolved it as indicated by antimoBB. Of cource you have to adapt the values according to your error message.

Tanks antimoBB, great note.
