Kaspersky 2011 / 2012 freeze Windows VM

Reported by: kurts-forum@… Owned by:
Component: VMM Version: VirtualBox 4.0.8
Keywords: VT-x Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description (last modified by Frank Mehnert)

Kaspersky Antivirus or Internet Security Suite 2011 or 2012 freeze virtual machine with Windows XP operating system at the end of boot process. Installation of Kaspersky was successful, however as soon as the antivirus application loads his main file avp.exe the complete virtual machine freezes.

Configuration: Virtualbox 4.0.8 with guest extension Host: Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate latest patch level; Processor Intel Pentium P8600 with VT-x enabled Guest: Windows XP SP3 Professional latest patch level; VM configuration PIIX3, VT-x/AMD-V; 768 MB RAM; 32 MB video RAM

Workaround: If VT-x/AMD-V will be disabled in the guest configuration, the Windows XP will operate correct including Kaspersky. Disadvantage VT-x performance of Intel hardware can not be used. Potential incomplete/broken fix of bug bug #1778 implemented in Virtualbox 3.0.2.

Problem can be duplicated on Virtualbox 4.0.10.

Problem applies to Windows 7 32-bit guest with Intel VT-x enabled too. If VT-x will be disabled in the guest configuration Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 works fine. On Windows 7 64-bit guest, where Intel VT-x is mandatory, Kaspersky functions correct. Hence, problem seems to be related to Windows 32-bit guests only.
