Did you assign an IP to the host side of the host-only network interface? Does your Linux guest have an IP assigned? Can you ping the host from the guest? Did you check the firewall settings of your Windows host?

thanks for such a fast reply frank, regarding your questions... No, I did not assign an IP to the host side of the host-only network interface as I had not done that in the previous vb versions. My Linux guest does have an IP, 192.168.1.101. The /etc/network/interfaces file has iface eth0 inet dhcp. I was not able to try to ping the host from the guest because... see below The firewall was down on all fronts. Update: before I submitted the defect I installed 4.0.6 over the top of 4.0.8 and verified that the problem did not exist. In order to attempt to answer your questions I installed 4.0.8 back over the top of 4.0.6. When the installation completed I was prompted that Administrator privs may have been required. This prompt had not previously occurred for a vb install, I said yes and re-installed with admin privs. Upon completion I was asked to reboot which also had not previously happened after an install. I did so, but after the reboot found that I did not have a host only adapter installed in the host OS. Attempting to install one from vb preferences ended in an error dialogue indicating failure. I proceeded to un-install vb via the control panel and re-install via right-click -> run as administrator. This finished successfully and now none of the problems exist. The host-only adapter was properly installed, and I now have the expected connectivity between the host and guest.
