VB 4.0.8 crashes with Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS upon GUI startup

Description
Many times (more often than not) VB v4.0.8 crashes at the end of the boot process of a Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS guest. The host is Win XP Pro 32 bit.
The error I get is
An unhandled exception occurred in VirtualBox.exe [189260]
Debugging that with VS2010, I see:
Unhandled exception at 0x059c4c12 in VirtualBox.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x048b0000
The VM is however responsive ... I can go ahead and login in the Ubuntu guest and continue the session. The moment I close the debugger then VB closes brutally.
