#901 closed defect (fixed)

Windows NT 4 guest additions incomplete

Reported by: Technologov Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 1.5.2
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: other Host type: other

Description

Windows NT 4 guest additions provide just the VGA with good colors & resolutions.

Other options lacks. No mouse integration (very needed), no guest auto resolution change, no other niceties...

This can be seen with NT 4 (SP0 and SP6) guests, on VBox 1.5.2.

P.S.: while most of those additions are not critical, having mouse integration *is* critical.

I feel that seamless support, proper audio drivers, and proper shared folder support would be considered "niceties" in Windows NT, and they are not provided by virtual box at this time, this would be a great improvement if supported in future versions. Many people run older windows OSes like NT, ME, 98, or 95 because they need to run legacy programs, and there experience with these OSes in virtualbox is below average compared to other virtual solutions out there.

a) seamless is impossible b) use the soundblaster option if you want audio

ME, 98 and 95 are at the bottom of our priority list.

The SoundBlaster16 emulation is available via SVN and will be contained in the next release.

Why is seamless impossible?

Well my specific concerns are mostly regarding NT 4, and that support is pretty bad at the moment. I need legacy OS support or I have no reason to use this software. I also don't understand why networking is not supported for NT 4.

Seamless mode under NT4 is impossible, because a lot of API calls (functions) are not available / missing for this platform, and won't be implemented afterwards.

Network is supposed to work with NT4 guests and it does very well here. NT4 ships a PCNet driver for the network card VirtualBox emulates. And file sharing using a Samba server on a Linux host works too: Configure the network interface as NAT and connect your guest ('map network drive...') to a SMB account at 10.0.2.2. Same with Windows hosts. Keep in mind that ICMP over NAT does not work by definition.
