Timer problems with serial port

Description
I've had a long-standing issue with serial ports. Using an external modem connected to the Linux host's serial port, and a Windows XP VM configured to use the host device. The VM will run progressively slower after startup until it becomes unusable. Serial communications become unreliable after a few minutes. Checking the log finds a quantity of timer errors.
Two other virtual machines running simultanesouly on the same host, one a Linux, one a Windows, that do not have enabled serial ports, have no problems.
