#8794 closed defect (obsolete)

latest update breaks Java on XP guest

Reported by: Florin Andrei Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 4.0.6
Keywords: java Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Linux

Description (last modified by aeichner)

Windows XP 32bit guest, Linux Ubuntu 10.04 32bit host.

Recently, I found I cannot run any Java application that has a GUI component. Running "java -version" in Command Prompt works fine, but any Java app that has a GUI, including the Java Control Panel, results in nothing happening on the screen, and the CPU usage goes to 100% due to javaw.exe

A work-around is to go to Control Panel / System / Advanced / Environment Variables / System Variables and add a variable called "J2D_D3D" with the value "false". This will supposedly disable Direct3D in Java. But this is not a proper solution.

BTW, this bug has occurred before. This is not the first time. Please make sure it is not repeated all over again. Thank you.

Also, when using the Dell DRAC (server administration software that comes with most Dell servers), the virtual media manager does not work anymore.

I add an ISO file as a new media to the manager, I attach it to the Virtual CD-ROM on the server, and everything seems fine. Yet the server never sees the virtual CD anymore.

This worked fine before.

I can reproduce the problem here and the suggested workaround works, too.

But it took me hours, to find this!

hello everybody

I also can reproduce the problem and the workaround works.

I'm running a WinXP 32b under Windows7 32b.

Problem appeared with last Vbox update.

Thank you

As a side note, the release of 4.1.8 today still didn't fix the issue. I am adding the workaround as noted above in my virtual machines to hopefully prevent this from triggering again.

Could you please attach the log of the failing session?

Still broken in VB 4.1.14, WinXP & Java 6_32 on Solaris 11. Tried all the usual workarounds - uninstall in safe mode, reinstall etc etc - the only one that works is the J2D_D3D.

Shame it is not fixed it on 4.1.18!

After a recent update to VirtualBox 4.2.4, with 64 bit host and WinXP 32 bit client, the suggested workaround cleared up the ridiculous load on my processors. Has this bug been reintroduced recently? Is there a status update on this ticket?
