what i did:
0) i tried lowering the user control as mentioned in a forum post
1) i tried installing them in safe mode
2) i checked the runonce registry key as mentioned in a forum post.

none of the above worked

I managed to solve by installing the manually downloaded 4.0.2 guest additions",defect,closed,guest additions,VirtualBox 4.0.4,fixed,,,Windows,Linux
