Very slow Apache request time when reading files in a Shared Folder on a Liunx guest

Description (last modified by )
I run a team of 10 developers who run either Snow Leopard, Windows 7 or Ubuntu as their host OS. We all run the same Ubuntu Lucid LTS guest to run our LAMP stack. We need to share /var/application from our hosts to our guests. If we use Shared Folders, apache will only server 180 request on static content. If we switch to a Samba or NFS share the we get 3-6 times the performance.
This problem, existed with our previous Debian, Ubuntu guests. I have tried importing the guest into VMWare Fusion and response time using their Shared Folders is very quick.
You can find more details about the problem here: http://blog.clock.co.uk/
If you need more information about our setup or strace outputs from apache, I can provide these upon request.

Please reopen if still relevant with a recent VirtualBox release.

We have a similar issue with Windows 7 host and CentOS guest.
