#8377 closed defect (obsolete)
Ubuntu guest cannot be allocated 3GB+ of memory on OS X host
Reported by: | Renaud Holcombe | Owned by: | |

Component: | other | Version: | VirtualBox 4.0.4 |
Keywords: | Cc: | ||
Guest type: | Linux | Host type: | Mac OS X |
Description
Since upgrading to version 4.0+ (this issue occurs on 4.0.2 and 4.0.4) whenever the memory used by a guest operating system (I've only tried with Ubuntu) reaches about 2.9GB (regardless of the amount of memory configured), the virtual machine will crash with a 'Low Host Memory' error even if there is free memory available on the host.

Try to enable the 64 bit kernel version on your OS X host. When using the 32 bit kernel, you hit a memory allocation limit at about 2.5 GB per process.
