SQL 2008 R2 x64 Failover Cluster — at Initial Version

Description

Host OS: Windows 7 x64 VirtualBox version: 4.0.2 Virtual Box Additions: 4.0.2r69518 Guest OS: Windows 2008 Enterprise R2 x64 Guest OS Clustered? Yes, functioning fail-over cluster using native iSCSI initiator Guest App: SQL 2008 Enterprise R2 x64

The OS cluster builds just fine. Installing SQL on each node works just fine. When running the Advanced Cluster Completion Wizard from the SQL installation media, I get to the screen where I have to provide a unique SQL Server Network Name. I click next and this error appears.

[Error Message] The given network name is unusable because there was a failure trying to determine if the network name is valid for use by the clustered SQL instance due to the following error: 'The network address is invalid. ==

My research via the web continually leads me to a known issue with Shared Folders that appears with VMware tools. The fix is simply to rerun the VMware tools installer, select modify, deselect Shared Folders. Rerun the SQL installation and it completes. I tried to do the same with Vbox Guest Additions and I don't have the option of removing the Shared Folders feature. I looked at the command line on VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe /? and it isn't available there either.

I realize that a bug in VMware is not a bug in Vbox but I would state that a modular installation of the Guest Additions where you can select what options you want to install (like VMware does) would be very helpful with troubleshooting. So while this isn't necessarily a bug, I'm humbly requesting you look into a modular installer in a future release.

Thanks for the good work so far!
