#7835 closed defect (fixed)

Compiz and hence the new Ubuntu unity interface does not work with VirtualBox 3D support — at Version 6

Reported by: Pim Schellart Owned by:
Component: 3D support Version: VirtualBox 3.2.12
Keywords: 3d, compiz, ubuntu, unity Cc:
Guest type: Linux Host type: Mac OS X

Description (last modified by misha)

Currently when running Ubuntu (11.04) as a VirtualBox guest OS unity is disabled by default because 3D support is not detected. This happens even though 3D acceleration is enabled in the virtual machine settings and the guest additions are installed.

This bug prevents users and developers from test driving Ubuntu's new GUI in a controlled environment.

(from the Unity developers) Unity requires a graphics feature called Frame Buffer Objects, which virtual box does not support.

Rather strange as we do support FBO (provided host GPU supports it as well). Could you post glxinfo output from your guest?

The compiz opengl plugin appears not to load for two reasons: Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing Fatal: Software rendering detected

Hi, there, please be aware about this information: http://www.webupd8.org/2010/12/how-to-test-ubuntu-1104-with-unity-in.html

I just tested it as well (Natty Alpha 1 on VirtualBox 4.0.0 on a Macbook Pro). Things seem to be far better. After installing the guest additions, the unity interface starts. Resizing the Guest Desktop doesn't work properly, however.

Confirmed it works now with VirtualBox 4.0.0. Bug can be closed.
