3D Acceleration fails in Linux guests

Reported by: Technologov Owned by:
Component: 3D support Version: VirtualBox 3.2.8
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Linux Host type: other

Description (last modified by misha)

3D Acceleration fails to accelerate many things -- glxgears, Compiz and KDE4 composition desktop.

Host: Windows XP, Intel Core 2 Q6600, ATI Radeon HD 3850, VBox 3.2.8

Guest: openSUSE 11.3 x64

Other Affected Guests: openSUSE 11.1/11.2/11.3, Fedora 12, RHEL6 (BETA1) (both 32 & 64bit)

  1. openSUSE/KDE3: Running "glxgears" on openSUSE guests makes them run at 250-500 fps, which is a "software rendering" performance.
  1. openSUSE/KDE4: I have tried to activate KDE4 kwin desktop compositing, but this failed, resetting to 2D mode. How to debug?
  1. Red Hat/GNOME: Tried to activate Compiz from GNOME menu, but this failed, resetting to 2D mode. How to debug?

According to Michael, KDE4 kwin cannot work, because VBox DRI OpenGL is incomplete. Leaving that.

Now Compiz...

Fedora 12 / 32bit works fine, but 64bit segfaults... every application segfaults. Tried compiz (desktop-effects), glxgears and even glxinfo... they all core dump, with both SELinux on and off. SELinux have no effect.

[root@localhost ~]# glxgears

Segmentation fault (core dumped)

My output of GDB shows a picture similar to Bug #7061

NOTE: RHEL 6 (BETA1) behaves differently than F12. Unlike F12, no segfaults here, but Compiz still fails, and reverts to 2D mode.

Output from RHEL6:

[user@localhost ~]$ desktop-effects
OpenGL Warning: No pincher, please call crStateSetCurrentPointers() in your SPU
OpenGL Info: Using XSHM for GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap
Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running.
