Windows XP guest will not start, VB 3.1.8, Ubuntu 10.04

Description

I just recently installed VB 3.1.8 on ubuntu 10.04 . Loaded my disk image and it worked fine. Asked me to install 3.1.8 addons, which I did, told me to restart. Now XP shows the loading screen and then terminates. I made a forum http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=30799 post, and have tried versions 3.20 and 3.22, but I still cannot get XP past it's splash screen.

Did this ever work with an older VBox release? I assume you installed the 3.1.8 additions, correct? An additional question: What exactly do you mean by Now XP shows the loading screen and then terminates -- does the VM process crash (I cannot see that from the log) or does the guest BSOD or does the guest really terminate, that is, terminates the VM normally? To me it seems the latter because the log contains Guest requests the VM to be turned off.

Is this a normal Windows XP installation or some migration from an installation on a real PC?

Unrelated: VT-x is disabled at your host, maybe it is disabled in the BIOS or a BIOS upgrade could help. However, the guest should run even with disabled VT-x. And, btw, your host reports an unusual amount of RAM (1498MB) -- is that correct? I would assume either ~1024MB or ~2048MB. Of course this is not the root of your problem.

Hello,

I installed this XP from my XP cd's in Virtual Box in Ubuntu 9.10 using a previous release, I assume 3.1.6 or 3.1.4. It had always worked for me. Then later I upgraded my distro to Ubuntu 10.04 and copied the .vdi image to my new installation. I then again installed the most recent Virtual Box and booted XP. It requested to install the 3.1.8 Guest Additions, which I allowed. I think also Windows update may have been running in the background. Anyhow after I restarted the VM, then XP will not start. I see the XP splash screen for a second, and then the VM gets killed or shutdown. It states in the log that XP has requested to shutdown, but why?

To be succinct

Is this a normal Windows XP installation or some migration from an installation on a real PC? Normal

does the VM process crash (I cannot see that from the log) or does the guest BSOD or

does the guest really terminate, that is, terminates the VM normally? I believe the log is correct, the guest keeps requesting to shutdown, for some unknown reason

Unreleated questions: machine is a laptop, I don't see a VT-X option in the bios, so I guess that's why it don't work Also 512mb is soldiered on board, and there is only one dimm slot with a maximum of 1gb additional, which explains the 1.5gb.
