    initial v1
1 I ran into the same problem with choppy sound with the ICH AC97 controller. It happened in VirtualBox versions 4.2.16 and 4.3 with a Windows XP Pro SP3 guest on hosts running Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 12.04 (Linux kernel 3.2.0-55-generic, PulseAudio). Switching the guest sound controller to SB16 made the audio less choppy but did not eliminate the problem completely. What resolved the sound issues for me was the solution from http://superuser.com/a/271736. '''This resolved all sound issues with a Windows XP guest on every host computer/OS combination I tried.''' The instructions are reproduced below:
