New Fixed Hard Disk fails in Ubuntu 9.10

Reported by: amanda Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 3.1.6

Guest type: Windows Host type: Linux

Description

When I try to create a new virtual machine through the GUI, I get as far as the progress meter indicating that "Create New Virtual Disk: creating fixed hard disk storage unit '/home/amand..." the progress meter loads at 0% and hangs there. If i hit the red "x" button, it reports it is canceling but also makes no progress. It is using a ton of CPU and not getting anywhere.

I definitely have plenty of space. The drive is meant to be 15G. I've got 49G available:

[0 amanda@luna ~]$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda5 78G 26G 49G 35% /
udev 1.5G 344K 1.5G 1% /dev
none 1.5G 1.1M 1.5G 1% /dev/shm
none 1.5G 116K 1.5G 1% /var/run
none 1.5G 0 1.5G 0% /var/lock
none 1.5G 0 1.5G 0% /lib/init/rw
none 78G 26G 49G 35% /var/lib/ureadahead/debugfs
/home/amanda/.Private
                       78G 26G 49G 35% /home/amanda

I totally removed VirtualBox and had to restart before I could remove my .VirtualBox/HardDisks directory. Reinstalled and the same thing is happening.

Also ... I don't see anything in /var/log/syslog. /var/log/messages, has only this line from startup:

Apr 22 09:00:16 luna kernel: [ 4907.612370] warning: `VirtualBox' uses 32-bit capabilities (legacy support in use)

Are there other logs I should be looking at?

I do have a successful Virtualbox installation running on a flexible size drive.

Still relevant? If so, on what file system is the directory with your virtual disk images located?
