Ubuntu host system freezes when a 64-Bit VM is launched on ASUS N90SC -UZ024V

Reported by: tankdriver Owned by:

Keywords: freeze VT-x Cc:
Guest type: other Host type: Linux

Description

I use Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit on an ASUS N90SC -UZ024V Notebook PC. The computer freezes immediately when "VT-x/AMD-V" is enabled and a VM is launched. (no kernel panic or something, Frozen till hard reset.)

cat /proc/cpuinfo shows me the "vmx" flag

sudo rdmsr 0x3a gives me "5"

So I think on the hardware side, everything is ok.

I can not provide a VBox.log file of a 64-Bit VM, because i did not found it. I will attach A VBox.log file of a successful 32-Bit VM run.

Windows 7 (64-bit) was pre-installed on my ASUS. With Windows as VirtualBox host, everything works. I will attach a A VBox.log file of a successful 64-Bit VM run on a Win7 host.

This problem is very disappointing for me, because I especially selected this Notebook, because its very Ubuntu-compatible and it should be able to do VT-x.

I made some testing with boot options (host system):

irqpoll

starting an 64-Bit VM crashes X on host > dropped back to tty1 shell. cursor is blinking but no reaction of keyboard (hard reset)

nolapic

starting an 64-Bit VM gives me an black screen (host), frozen.

irqpoll nolapic

starting an 64-Bit VM > black screen + KERNEL PANIC

With irqpoll there has been created a VBox.log file. (irqpoll_VBox.log attached)

Well, the last log is still with VT-x disabled. Any chance for a BIOS update?
