#627 closed enhancement (fixed)

virtualbox doesn't play pc speaker sounds generated by the guest -> partly fixed, contributions welcome (see description)

Description (last modified by Michael Thayer)

When the guest generates sounds via the pc speaker, they aren't played on the host through either the host's pc speaker if one exists, and/or through the host's sound card. I believe that vmware sends pc speaker sounds generated by the guest to the host's pc speaker, and I know that both qemu, as well as virtualpc send pc speaker sounds generated by the guest to the host's sound card. I personally would find it very helpful to hear any pc speaker beeps which the guest generates, and would appreciate it if the inclusion of this feature in virtualbox could please be considered.

Update Oct 1 2018: This was fixed in a very limited way<1> in VirtualBox 5.0.18. Patches for a more general fix are welcome. Please write to the vbox-dev mailing list if you are seriously interested in contributing.

I am trying to play alert sounds in a python program, with no success. I discovered that I can not make any sounds using the Linux Terminal program.

I am running CentOS 5.2 as the host system for VirtualBox 2.1.2

I have tried this with the following guest operating systems:

CentOS 5.2 Ubuntu 8.10 OpenSolaris Windows XP cmd.exe

I can make a system beep by typing backspace at the bash prompt using the Terminal program of the host CentOS 5.2 system. Doing the same thing using the Terminal program of the guest CentOS 5.2 system produces nothing.

If I set preference for visual beep, the title bar of the Terminal program flashes. I do get sound when I visit youtube.com via Firefox, or when I play an mp3 using VLC.

It has been over 7 years and this bug is still outstanding. Are there any plans of fixing this bug?

I'm afraid that there currently are not as far as I know. We would happily accept a code contribution if it could be integrated without too much work on our side, but otherwise fixing this is just too low priority relative to the other things we have to do and our available engineering time.

Part of VBox 5.0.18.

It is possible to work-around this in the guest operating system, at least if you're running under X11. See the X11 section of this post on askubuntu.

Can an admin please fix the title of the ticket? The "won't fix" is throwing people off...

Me, to be exact ;)

@Frank who posted it is now fixed as of VBox 5.0.18, it doesn't seem fixed to me. I'm running VBox 5.1.30, and unless support that used to exist (at the time you posted it was fixed) has since actually been removed, then it should still support PC speaker. Any idea on how to enable PC speaker in VBox? Is it a setting that can only be accessed via the command line VBox, not from the GUI?
