Mouse scroll wheel works initially but after using host (Win7) and returning to guest (Ubuntu) it no longer works — at Version 1

I have: Windows 7 64bit host. Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit guest. Guest additions for 3.1 installed. All OSs and virtuablox 3.1 fully up-to-date.
When I initially boot the guest mouse scroll wheel works. If I then leave the guest, use the host OS and then return to the guest the scroll wheel no longer works.
Mouse is MS Intellimouse Explorer 3. (I have tried with and without the MS Intellipoint drivers - same result.) I do not have a non MS mouse to try with.
There are similar reports: http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/4961 but none exactly like this that I can find.
