I used to have Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit installed in VB 3.0.10 with 2 CPUs for the guest (host has 2 cpus) and all was fine. Then I decided to update both (ubuntu to 9.10 64-bit desktop and vb to 3.1.0) at the same time, with the default options and the only differences being that I removed floppy support and changed CPUs from 1 to 2. Installation was painful, and I had to reinstall several times. Normal issues are: - doesn't shut down, stays at the ugly yellow ubuntu 9.10 background - doesn't boot, grub fails miserably, or - doesn't boot, plays the first few ms of the ugly ubuntu boot chime repeatedly, then stops the sound, and freezes at the ugly flashy loading screen (this is the log I'm attaching to this ticket) - apt-get upgrade or installing a bunch of packets makes the whole installation go boom and one of the previous issues arise - make -j2 borks the compilation... amongst others. I tried with 1 cpu, and things were much more stable, I didn't get any issues then. " defect closed guest smp VirtualBox 3.1.0 fixed Linux Mac OS X
