#5477 new defect

Mini toolbar option in GUI is confusing and inconsistent with Shared Clipboard option

Description

Hi, using VirtualBox 3.0.10 on Windows XP host. On General section on Advanced tab there are two settings: "Shared Clipboard" and "Mini Toolbar". Both of them are solving same type of problem, but there are solved very differently using GUI options, which can be very confusing, specially for new user.

I suggest to implement "Mini ToolBar" option like "Shared Clipboard" option and that is create drop down menu with three options: "Disable", "Show At Top Of Screen" and "Show At Bottom of Screen".

This kind of solving the same type of problem would make GUI tool more user friendly especially for new users. Regards

I don't understand you at all.

Those two features are different and are solving different problems.

  1. Shared Clipboard is used to copy-paste text between host and guests.
  1. Mini toolbar is used to control devices (mainly CD-ROM) when guest is in Full-screen or Seamless mode.

Now try to explain yourself, what do you mean, when you say "solving same type of problem".

Technologov, I know this two options has completely different meaning.

Shared Clipboard is ok, no complain about it. This option is just for referencing. I just don't like how "Mini ToolBar" is solved. Instead of "Show In Fullscreen/Seamless" and "Show At Top Of Screen" check boxes I suggest to use only one drop-down box (just like there is a logic at Shared Clipboard).

Sample: If I would like to disable "Shared Clipboard", I just select "Disabled" from drop-down box, this is OK. But if I like to disable "Mini ToolBar" I need to uncheck "Show In Fullscreen/Seamless" check box. You see the same >>type<< of problem but different way of solution. What I suggest for "Mini ToolBar" is:

  1. Remove both checkboxes "Show In Fullscreen/Seamless" and "Show At Top Of Screen".
  2. Instead of two checkboxes add one drop-down box with the following options:

a) Disabled (it should function just like if "Show In FullScreen/Seamless is unchecked)
b) Show At Bottom Of Screen (it should function just like "Show In FullScreen/Seamless" is checked and "Show At Top Of Screen" is unchecked)
c) Show At Top Of Screen (it should function just like "Show In FullScreen/Seamless is checked and "Show At Top Of Screen" is also checked)

Like it is now the most confusing option is "Show In FullScreen/Seamless" - where is Mini ToolBar placed? At Bottom? At Right? At Left? In the Middle?

I think this kind of minor GUI problem appeared because at first there was only "Show In Fullscreen/Seamless" and there was only an option to have it at bottom. But when "Show At Top Of Screen" was enabled, then this kind of two check-boxes are in inconsistent state comparing how Shared Clipboard is solved.

Aha ! Understand ! Great idea !

I Agree with your design, but this is not a bug, but an enhancement.

Just an update. Now solved in v4.0.

comment:5 by Technologov, 13 years ago

Nope. This is not solved. Look at original screenshots of your proposal.

There were no changes between v3.0.x and v4.0.0. But I am OK with the current design.

Technologov, I can't believed, I have made a little typo. Instead of "not" I have written "now".

It is NOT solved.

Just simple update. I have installed vbox 4.1.2 and this problem still persists.
