Various games crash on startup in VirtualBox

A number of games from GameHouse and BigFish will simply crash on startup in VirtualBox, or start showing a black screen. This has been happening for basically the whole VBox 3 series (never tried with 2) with the VirtualBox guest additions
To take one example among many, "Campfire legends, the hookman" (http://www.gamehouse.com/download-games/campfire-legends-the-hookman), freely downloadable for a trial, crashes on startup, the error report says the error occurred in wined3d.dll (unfortunately I cannot get any significant log).
A different example is provided by "Drawn, the painted tower" (http://www.bigfishgames.com/download-games/6098/drawn-the-painted-tower/index.html), freely downloadable for a trial, which does start, but results in a completely black screen.
This is happening with Virtual Box 3.0.10 running on a Ubuntu 9.04 machine with an nVidia card and the native nvida drivers version 185.18.36.
