USB lock up

Description
I have windows 7 for the host and windows XP for the guest. I'm running VB 3.0.10. my programs run faster now but when I connect a thumb drive to my USB to back up the data on a financial program I have the USB drive starts running and does not stop and locks up my financial program and virtual box. can anyone help with why this happens?
