#5154 closed defect (fixed)

Documentation doesn't say how to install guest additions on headless

Description

After scrounging around the web for a while I found out that the .iso file with guest additions might have been installed on the host somewhere, but this is far from explicit in the documentation. My host is OpenSolaris, BTW.

Well, you have to attach the additions ISO to the VM and then install them. The GUI just hides this from you. I'm pretty sure the iso image is mentioned somewhere.

It's not "mentioned somewhere" in the user manual. The fact that the iso image is "mentioned somewhere" doesn't help me find out where it is. I spent half an hour googling around to find out that the ISO existed, and another half an hour googling around for where I could download it, before I surmised that it was probably hiding in /opt/VirtualBox on my OpenSolaris host! If you're going to say headless is a supported mode of operation, it seems to me that you have to be willing to document things like this, no?

IMO, omissions like this one should be taken more seriously, if not because of user frustration, then because of all the time your developers will waste answering the same questions repeatedly.

Chapter 4: Guest Additions in the user manual happens to mention that the guest additions are in the VirtualBoxAdditions.iso image. Where the file is located is kind of obvious if you ask me.

I've changed the docs to explicitly mention the whereabouts of the ISO.
