Description

Since Virtual Box is passing the work to the real graphics driver (where the S3 patented algorithms implementations live), it seems that it could reveal that it has this capability and make it accessible when the underlying driver supports it.

This would increase the success likelihood of Direct3D 6.0+ mapped to OpenGL calls (because Direct3D 6.0 requires DXTX which is just a renamed form of S3TC) http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=19501 http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/4495

It's already supported (for host cards which support opengl 2.0).

Maybe that is true under some configurations (but that doesn't appear to be the case with my Windows Host and Linux Guest) As you can see in my Virtual Box log output, OpenGL version is 2.1.8494 (which is greater than 2.0) contains GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc, but a glxinfo shown further down has no such entry.
