selecting "Enable Desktop Effects" causes white screen; subsequent shutdowns occasionally fail

Description
I'm using Virtualbox 2.2.2 on a Vista 64-bit Host and a Fedora 10 Guest. I've enabled 3D Acceleration and installed the guest additions. Whenever I select "Enable Desktop Effects", I get a white screen. After I do that, any following shutdown usually (but not always) seems to hand.
