Feature Request: Virtual Distributed Ethernet

Reported by: Inimi Owned by:
Priority: minor Component: network
Version: VirtualBox 2.1.0 Keywords: Virtual Distributed Ethernet
Cc: Guest type: other
Host type: other

Description

I propose a networking plugin for VDE:  http://vde.sourceforge.net/

This would be enhance the scalability of Virtualbox and overcome the hostinterface/bridging deficits. (No good manual, no strict internal network which could be configured, no same network across several physical machines)

This extension is not minor, it is blocker!

Virtual box cannot be used with any virtual networking utensils. If you want to connect two vms and a hsot, you are forced to have a physical device!!!

This is a main deficit of Virtualbox.

You can attach to a TAP device which doesn't need to be connected to a physical nic. Internal networking can be used between VMs.

I also don't understand your panics: You're not a kernel after all ! :)

Just create a TUN/TAP network interface on host, attach a VM to it using "Host Networking" (aka vboxnetflt), then attach this TUN/TAP to your VDE.

I think this bug should be CLOSED as WONTFIX.

Above I briefly described a long way of doing things. It is unlikely that VirtualBox team will develop any shortcuts and fancy GUI for that use scenario.

Virtual Distributed Ethernet can be used with VirtualBox via Host Interface networking. I think some community documentation should be written on this topic.

Is there a way VDE could be integrated with VBox GUI without making the VBox GUI too complex for normal users ?

If yes, then explain please. (better yet, draw a mockup demo)

If no, then I vote *no* for this wish.

There is no need to make the VBox GUI more complex for normal users. Currently VBox has all the features to be useful for advanced users and all the ease-of-use for the casual users. Let's make this balance stay the current way.

This wish looks like wish #2728 in spirit, but not in details.
