Vbox 2.1 XP guest freezes during startup

Reported by: Richard Bacchetta Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 2.1.0

Guest type: Windows Host type: Linux

Description

With the recent upgrade to 2.1 my Windows XP guest on a Linux host freezes when starting Windows at the Welcome screen. It loaded once to the desktop and now regularly freezes at Welcome.

It was very reliable with previous versions. I am contemplating downgrading to 2.0.6, but am concerned the vdi has been modified to work with 2.1.

The .vdi was not modified, only the .xml files in your ~/.VirtualBox directory. I assume you have backup files from the conversion so you can use them to restore.

Replying to frank:

Yes I do have the backup files. What is the best way to revert, completely uninstall 2.1, then install 2.06? Or can it be installed over 2.1?

Is there any traction on this bug? I've got a similar problem since upgrading to VirtualBox 2.1 (from 2.0.6).

Host: Windows XP x64 Guest: Linux - Ubuntu 8.04

What happens is that the first time, I start up the guest, everything is fine. However, once I shutdown the guest, I can no longer start it up anymore. ie. VirtualBox 2.1 will freeze *after* the first startup.

Please attach a VBox.log file of such a freezing VM session. Regarding the backup: You have to restore them manually. Go into the ~/.VirtualBox directory and search for backup files. Their name is obvious so it should be easy to restore them to the original files.

I should mention that the Ubuntu 8.04 guest that freezes upon start up (AFTER the first startup) is a 32-bit while I'm running on a WinXP 64-bit host. It's semi-usable right now since the first time starting up works. However, if I shutdown the virtual machine, I need to reboot the host before I can start it up again.

I just installed VirtualBox 2.1.4. For my particular problem, it seems that I'm now able to start up the VM again after shutdown. However, host interface networking now seems be hosed. It used to work in VirtualBox 2.1.0 and 2.1.3.

PS. NAT seems to work though.

Ok, after a system reboot and re-installation of the Guest additions, I seem to be able to get Host Interfacing working again.
