v2.1.0 host interface network crashes RHEL5 host

Reported by: Steve Elliott Owned by:
Component: network Version: VirtualBox 2.1.0
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: other Host type: Linux

Description

Virtual Box 2.1.0 crashes my RHEL5 host notebook when I start a VM with Host Interface selected.

The notebook crashes with CapsLck & ScrollLck LEDs flashing.

If the network is selected as "not attached", NAT or Internal then the VM starts with no problem.

This happens with both a XP guest VM and also an "Other/Unknown" VM that I configure for an Embedded OS.

(I now realise flashing LEDs means "Kernel Panic".)
Host eth0 is active - r8169 - Realtek RTL-8169 in PMcia 1Gig Netgear card.
Host eth1 is InActive - b44 - Broadcom BCM4401-80 integrated NIC.
The notebook does have Intel 2915ABG wireles but this is turned off.
For Guest Adapter 1 I tried both PCnet-FAST III Am79C973 & PRO/1000 Desktop.
