router/switch

Reported by: dba61 Owned by:

Version: VirtualBox 2.0.6 Keywords:
Cc: Guest type: Linux
Host type: Windows

Description

a radio button or check box that could be selected to tell Virtualbox what its function is in a virtual network. Example: NIC 1: NAT (router) to host Example: NIC 2: Switch (a VM could be router/dhcp/server) to all VMs connected to NIC 2.

this would allow one host to to have an entire virtualized network for testing. For example I would be able to have 6 VMs talikg to each other and maybe to the host.

Something like that is still possible. Use an internal network, attach a DHCP server to this internal network using VBoxManage (the DHCP server functionality was introduced in VBox 2.2) and attach every VM you like to that internal network.

To talk to the outside, either use a host-only network instead of the internal network (the VMs can talk to each other and to the host, the host can talk to the VMs). Or attach all VMs to the same bridged adapter, then all VMs can talk to each other and to the outside.

To be in line with your example, select NIC 1 of the VM as bridged adapter and attach NIC 2 to an internal network with an assigned DHCP server. All other VMs should then attach to the same internal network.

I vote *no* for this wish.

And I vote no, as an advanced user, whom actually done many virtual routers and switches in life.

This is because the people that need Routers/Switches understand networking deeply enough to configure it manually using VBox more generic "Host-Network" option.

There is no need to make the VBox GUI more complex for normal users. Currently VBox has all the features to be useful for advanced users and all the ease-of-use for the casual users. Let's make this balance stay the current way.

It looks somewhat related to wish #4134 but different.

This wish looks like wish #3044 in spirit, but not in details.

dba61: Would you like to clarify your wish a bit more, to tell us what feature is lacking ?
