No Ethernet Ubuntu/Windows guest after computer wake host from sleep

Description

Problem

  • Broken Ethernet TX/RX in Ubuntu/Windows guest after computer wake from sleep.
  • Wireshark in the guest shows TX packets, but no incoming packets.
  • Wireshark in the host does not show any network traffic from/to the guest.

Setup

  • VirtualBox v6.1.30 or v6.1.32
  • Windows 10 20H2 host (updates installed of today)
  • Ubuntu 21.04 guest or Windows 10 guest (updates + guest additions installed)
  • VM Intel (R) i211 Gigabit Network connection (default)
  • VM Bridge network

Reproducible testcase

  1. Make sure Ethernet works on the host and guest.
  2. Set computer in sleep mode.
  3. Wake computer.
  4. Network on host works.
  5. Network in guest broken: TX and RX failed according to WireShark logs.

Additional info

  • Reproducible on AMD Ryzen 7/9 and Intel Core I7 laptops/desktops.
  • Hyper-V on host not enabled.
  • Disabling/enabling network in guest does not work.
  • Ethernet cable disconnect/reconnect host does not work.
  • Virtual Ethernet link down/up guest does not work.
  • Set guest in paused mode before sleep/wake host does not work.
  • Disconnect Ethernet before sleep/wake host does not work.
