    2 hello and happy new year to you & yours.  I had this exact issue - here is how I got it to work for me [ on MacBook Pro running Big Sur ]
    3 *unmount your usb device(s) from your mac.  but leave it connected to the Mac
    4 *install the extension pack - https://www.smarthomebeginner.com/install-virtualbox-extension-pack-on-linux-windows/
    5 *and enable USB 3 (for new USB 3 devices) in settings of virtual box [ under ports - usb ] .  there you should c 3 entries for USB (1, 2 & 3)
    6 *in that same section - look at the filters section.  this is essentially telling what usb devices to start with your vm.  & just choose your usb device
    7 *then start your vm.
