#18692 new defect

No sound or internet with Virtualbox 6

Description

Using ALSA and NAT. Tried an earlier version, sound also didn't work, had to revert to an old version of Virtualbox 5. Too many system-wide updates this time with my kernel and other software, can't revert, so if this is unfixable I'll probably have to go with VMWare until they can iron these bugs out. I've been using Virtualbox for years and years with occasional issues but now it seems I've hit a wall.

Also, for the record I have the same problems in the latest version of Virtualbox 5.

BTW, the system host is Arch Linux.

  1. It's usually better and faster, if issues get first addressed in the VirtualBox forums, a lot more eyes there. More than 95% of the issues are resolved in the forums, which keeps the developers focusing on the bug fixes and enhancements, and there is no need for another ticket to keep track of. For example, yours is most probably not a bug and someone from the developers has to deal with it and close it as "Invalid".

Plus a discussion and analysis on the bug tracker is going to help me, you, and potentially a future drive-by user or two. Not so in the forums, many more tend to benefit...

So, open a new thread in the VirtualBox on Linux Hosts section of the forums. Please be sure to mention that you came from the bug tracker and include the ticket number.

  1. You were supposed to follow these steps when you filed the bug, and provide a VBox.log:

Attach a (full) log file ("Machine" menu/"Show Log" in the main VirtualBox Manager window) straight away to save time for you and for us. The log file contains a lot of useful information about both the host and the guest systems as well as information about what happened during a particular machine run. Please do not cut and paste it.

Do that in the new thread in the forums.

  1. You should never open a ticket for two issues. Never a "NAT" and "Sound" in the same basket. You're asking for help at this point, not filing a ticket. See point No 1.
  1. Replying to shillshocked:

Are you "threatening" that you're going leave an open-source/free project? Interesting thought process, I got to say...

I searched the forums for quite a while but the usual fixes were not, at the time, to be found. It's been an ongoing issue dealing with ALSA no sound regressions and Internet connectivity issues for several versions of this software.

I'm only switching to VMWare for practical reasons. It probably won't get fixed until maybe another year (based on previous experiences), so why wait until then to use a virtual machine?

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
